Bangkok Thoughts

Being a pure city boy, coming to Bangkok had set me thinking on quite a few points. This is a rather ironic thought given that Bangkok is also a city.

I had arrived here with 2 bags, alone, with no map. Probably its just my preferred style as I feel that I am more of a roamer and I do prefer to discover things as it comes. I had actually realized that my navigation skills are not that bad given that I had found some places mentioned by my friends so easily without even referring to the map!

On a lower note, I had noticed the differences between the income groups are huge beyond my imagination. From people carrying Pradas to people begging on the streets with their child. A saddening thing that I had noticed was this primary school girl dressed in her school uniform being forced to beg in order to feed herself. 

This made me realize how lucky I am to be Singaporean. 

To be honest, I did not really enjoy my stay here much to the disbelief of many given that they had a lot of great times in this country. Don’t get me wrong. This is a beautiful country and the people are really nice. However, probably its just my personal mentality and also because I am by myself. Thus, I am not so aware of what are the best places to go to here.

To end with a cliche, I did not regret having spent 5 days here. I would like to thank Thailand for having me. The reason for this would be because at the end of the day, I had gained many experiences and learning lessons from this trip and I would want to come back here again soon. Hopefully with my love. =)

Experiences of Bangkok

When I first mentioned that I have not been to Bangkok before within the span of my 23 year life, many were appalled since it is rather a ritual to come here within the first 21 years of one’s life.

I boarded the plane with a slight feeling of uneasiness and melancholy due to the primary fact that I had never travelled alone before. Moreover, tears from the person that I cherish the most had dropped minutes before i departed. What experiences, be it good or bad will I obtain from this trip?

I had to travel to Bangkok for work. My worries that the whole process would not go smooth were answered as the exhibition booth that I had to project manage for my client did not move in on the first day of the set-up. This had left me panicking for quite a while given the amount of trust my client had in me. My Thailand office had let me down which comes as a shock given that my company, being global and listed in the stock exchange in Thailand, could not give me the assurance that the project would be executed well. 

The next 3 days was filled with my constant shouting for things to be done faster and more efficiently. Things that had been briefed were not done. Given the urgency of the schedule, I was even geared up to do installation work which ironically, had paid my Thailand office to do it. The day passed quickly with my Thai Colleague letting me down and reducing my confidence before I had flipped and went directly to her boss. 

The entire process was rather painful but we had managed to finally finish the booth in time for the opening with smiling faces all around. I had managed to somehow gain back my client’s confidence in me and we were happy to move forwards with our next show.

I did not really have a good experience for the 1st 3 days that I was here as the food I had consumed all came out of my mouth shortly after I had consumed it. Despite many people telling me that the food here is awesome, I cannot help but blame myself for my weakness in enjoying street culture. I would say the fault would be entirely mine given my pampered taste preferences would not allow me to consume the food.

I had finally met my cousin on the fourth day of my trip and had managed to catch up with her on quite a lot of things. One of which, embarrassingly, was that I found out that she is really blood related to me. The reason to why I thought otherwise would be because of the screw ups on my dad’s side of the family. Needless to say, she had brought me to Siam Paragon for Thai food and that was when I finally managed to have a good meal there. 

I anticipate the day when I finally return to Singapore and be back together with my honey.
